سلطان الأطرش
In the name of God the Merciful
(Translated by Moutassem Abou-Hamdan)
My Arab brothers and sons…
I intended in my final days, waiting for the righteous death, to address you saying my goodbyes and recommendations.
This nation has bestowed on me the leadership of the Great Syrian Revolution against the insidious French occupation. I took the command that I was entrusted and requested the honorable death and fulfilled the trust.
The revolution was launched from The Mountain, the proud Jabal al-Arab, to include and spread across the nation, with the slogan:" Religion is for God and the homeland is for all ", and I think it achieved enchantment and pride for you and humiliation and regret for colonialism.
My advice to you, my Arab brothers and sons, is that you have a long way before you and severe hardships requiring two Jihads: Jihad with the self and Jihad with the enemy. Be patient, like the patience of the Liberators, and let your national unity, the strength of your faith and the adherence to your defenses the way to respond to the enemy’s plots and expel the colonists and liberate the land. And know that you are indebted to maintain independence after many of the martyrs died and lots of blood was shed for it. And know that Arab unity is strength and power and it is the dream of generations and the road to salvation. And know that what was taken by the sword, with the sword it is taken back, and that faith is stronger than any weapon, and a bitter drink with glory is more delicious than the water of life with humiliation. Belief is begged through patience, is kept through justice, is maintained through certainty, and strengthened through Jihad. Go back to your history, which is full of trophies and rich glories. I have not seen a stronger impact on the soul than reading history: it alerts feelings, it awakens minds to mobilize the people to win its liberty and achieve its unity, pride, and dignity and fly the flags of victory. And know that piety is to God, love is for the land, righteousness is a winner, honor is to preserve morals. Pride is in freedom and dignity, advancement is in education and work, security is in justice, and power is in collaboration.
Thank God and thank God. He has given me life, I spent it in Jihad. I satisfied him by being ascetic. He supported me and guided me, and helped me with my companions. I ask him forgiveness and support; he’s my helper and my agent.
Whatever I left behind from property and money is the result of the efforts of a modest farmer governed by the merciful religious statute.
